Alumni Spotlight: Lisa Verkerk
“Being at ISA, I truly felt that I was contributing to something greater than myself and that I was making a difference in the lives of my students and my colleagues, however small that might be.”
Meet Lisa Verkerk, our PYP and Project Zero Coordinator who is retiring after 25 years at ISA.
What were your most memorable experiences at ISA?
I loved being a Grade 4 and Grade 5 teacher for 17 years, followed by eight years as the PYP Coordinator and 16 years as the Project Zero Coordinator. Super enjoyable was also working with the Grade 4 & 5 students in our Green Team organic garden.
How did your time at ISA impact your life?
I truly felt that I was contributing to something greater than myself and that I was making a difference in the lives of my students and my colleagues, however small that might be.
What is your current career, and why did you choose that path? What advice do you have for others looking to enter into your field of work?
Teaching is so rewarding, students and colleagues give you so much companionship and affection. No two days are ever the same, so you will never get bored.
What advice or insights do you have for our current ISA students?
Life will give you so many opportunities if you stay open-minded and can embrace change.
The ISA Alumni Spotlight series aims to showcase the journeys of individuals in our student, teacher and parent alumni communities. We ask them to reflect on how ISA made an impact on their life, and to share their advice on how to carry the mission of international understanding.
